Complementary Therapies

At Cork ARC Cancer Support House, we provide a range of one-to-one therapies which offer support for patients and their loved ones. Complementary therapies are therapies that can be used together with standard medical treatment to help you feel better emotionally and to manage side effects and symptoms. All of our therapies fully conform to best medical practice. Therapeutic massage, reflexology and acupuncture are available by appointment at our centre in Cork city, and therapeutic massage and reflexology are available at our centre in Bantry. Our holistic and complementary therapies are available by appointment.

Therapeutic Massages

A gentle touch from an experienced massage therapist can help you get through those tough days and find a place for your body to relax.

The benefits of massages are multifaceted for many patients and relatives. It helps reduce tension, anxiety and pain and improve sleep and circulation, and the overall feeling of peace and ease can be restored to the body.

Our massage therapists work with you and your medical team to complement the medical model.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves putting tiny, hair-thin needles into the body at particular points. These needles are left in place for a few minutes and then removed by the practitioner. Acupuncture works by stimulating nerves, releasing endorphins and serotonin in the spinal cord and brain, thereby relieving pain.

Acupuncture can help with

  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Dry Mouth
  • Breathlessness
  • Hot Flushes

It can also be used as a way to help relieve stress, and in some cases can help reduce nausea in people undergoing chemotherapy.

Acupressure

Acupressure is used to restore health and balance to the body’s channels of energy by applying pressure to opposing channels of energy. This means that therapists will apply pressure on specific areas of the body with the aim of helping a problem elsewhere in the body. One of the great advantages of acupressure is that it is safe to do on yourself, all you need are two hands and can practice it anytime, anywhere. Some benefits of Acupressure include reduced nausea and fatigue, increased circulation and an overall relaxation of the body.

Reflexology involves the application of pressure to points on the hands and feet. IT can help you to relax, cope with stress and anxiety, relieve pain, and lift your mood to provide a feeling of wellbeing.

The idea behind this is that there are certain points on the feet and hands that correspond to the organs and glands in the body. By pressing and massaging these points, energy pathways within the body are stimulated. Where these pathways become blocked, reflexology aims to unblock them. This allows the energy to flow freely, restoring balance to the body.
